Lynx +, compact industrial Ethernet switch with routing functionality
Westermo Data Communications announce the launch of the Lynx+ managed Ethernet switch for industrial applications. Extending the well established Lynx series, this new version includes Westermo’s powerful WeOS operating system that provides increased switching and routing functionality to enable the device to meet the ever growing demand for secure and reliable networks. Lynx+ provides managed switching, routing, and firewall functions within a single integrated product
The WeOS operating system, which is currently used in Westermo’s RedFox high performance industrial routing switches, offers comprehensive support for routing and bandwidth control techniques such as VLANs, and IGMP. Furthermore, WeOS provides interoperability with third party equipment, ensuring the Lynx+ can operate within any existing or new large scale complex network.
The Lynx+ is a 10 port device that is suitable for advanced layer 2 switching as well as layer 3 routing. It has eight fixed 10/100/BaseTX ports and two Gigabit SFP ports that support pluggable modules, enabling you to choose from a variety of transceivers.
To ensure the network resilience, Lynx+ supports STP (Spanning Tree Protocol) and RSTP (Rapid STP), and also features Westermo’s unique FRNT (Fast Recovery of Network Topology) redundant ring functionality. This is the fastest protocol on the market to automatically reconfigure a large network in the event of any line or hardware failure. FRNT is able to reconfigure a redundant ring network consisting of up to 200 switches within 20 ms, regardless of network load. STP/RSTP and FRNT can be combined enabling Lynx+ to be integrated with products from other vendors in redundant network solutions.
Routing is an essential function for the merging of the management network infrastructure and factory automation networks. To meet this need, Lynx+ enables both static and dynamic routing and supports the most widely used protocols including OSPFv2 and RIPv1/v2. Network redundancy of the WAN is supported by a range of features including the Virtual Router Redundancy Protocol (VRRP), Network Address Translation (NAT), port forwarding and IPSec-encrypted Virtual Private Networks (VPNs). Firewall functions also provide simple segregation to ensure dataflow is controlled between networks.
Comprehensive VLAN (Virtual LAN) support for up to 64 virtual networks increases security and network bandwidth and improves manageability. VLANs can also be allocated to particular switch ports and centrally configured. Lynx+ also supports IGMPv2/v3 (Internet Group Management Protocol) snooping, which provides filtering techniques to manage the flow of data around the ring in such a way as to optimise the bandwidth – ideal for video streaming applications.
A secure web interface, accessed via a VPN tunnel or using SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol), enables the easy configuration of redundant rings and VLANs and setting up basic firewalls. For more advanced configuration, the intuitive Command Line Interface (CLI) allows fine tuning without the need for a reboot.
A full metal housing (IP 40) with a footprint size of only 100mm x 50mm makes the Lynx+ the smallest switch of its type on the market. Its industrial design has no fan or other moving parts and uses only industrial grade components. A wide DC power range from 24 to 48 VDC is available and the device can operate in temperatures from –40° to +70°C. The product is type-tested and approved according to a variety of industrial standards.
